Still 'hideously white', but for how long?
Second- and third-generation Black and minority ethnic Britons are growing up with the impression that news organisations perceive them as outsiders. Their broad accusation that newsrooms remain almost entirely white and do not reflect the diversity of 21st century Britain is fairly accurate. This chapter examines strategies by British and mainland European news organisations to address this deficit. It points to examples of good practice, but finds a lack of real commitment in many sectors of the industry and a reluctance among many newspaper employers, in particular, to take the critical step of monitoring the ethnicity of their workforce.
